Parents: how do you plan to teach your children sex education?

Are you plan on teaching the "birds and the bees" yourself, or have them learn it through their school system? What stuff do you want taught to your kids (Abstinence, safe sex, homosexuality.. etc.)- and at what age do you think is appropriate?

They are talking on the radio right now about offering condoms to elementry school kids.. and not having to tell the parents. is it just me, or is that insanity? Would that be contributing to the delinquency of a minor? What about age of consent and all that? Sorry, just listening in disbelief!

I'm hoping to just teach the concepts as they arise.

My girls are now 5 and 7, and I've been waiting for a while for them to ask how the baby gets inside the mommy so that I can give a simple, honest explanation. They do know how the baby comes out (vaginally and c-section, since I've had both kinds of deliveries), and they know the proper names for their body parts. All three of my kids (including my 2-year-old) also know that Mommy bleeds every month and that it's called a period and it doesn't hurt me, but they haven't asked beyond that.

As for homosexuality, they do know that sometimes boys marry boys or girls marry girls, but they don't have much actual experience with those scenarios.

If my oldest doesn't ask anything by age 8 or so, I may try to find an opportunity to introduce a simple explanation of sex, and we'll just take things step by step from there.

I think giving condoms to elementary kids is absolutely ridiculous, and if it ever happened at my child's school, I'd be up there in a heartbeat putting a stop to it.
